The Story of Stuff

The Story of Stuff

I first saw this last year about this time.  The dawning of the new year seems to me a good time to keep the message in mind.  Take 20 minutes out of your day to watch.

Couldn't sleep huh? Lost intrest in the vid as it kept rebuffering often. Did it ever come to a viable solution? Most of the studies I read come to the simple solution that humans should not exist... but I don't see a long line at the "I will volunteer to not exist" depot. On a positive note; the forest in Shasta County is currently producing more than we use - not just because of the economy. Real "growth" has been up for many years. The major challenge to the health of the forest in CA is the unmanaged forest. In an effort to protect it, we are not removing the "ladder fuels" and when a lightening storm comes through, it's just a big barbecue grill waiting for a match. My solution? Spend 20% of our fire resources "up front" cleaning and protecting instead of only putting them out. People say we should just let them burn, like the indians did, and that would take care of it. That only works in a forest where we have done that consistently, not where we have allowed the ladder fuels to grow. The entire forest simply burns and is gone... trees and all. Hope you found this interesting. :-)

The thought I come away with each time I see this is, Why do I need so much NEW stuff? Why don't I shop at 2nd hand stores anymore? The disappointing answer is convenience. I want to go to a store and find as many of the items I need in one place. That's not guaranteed in a thrift store. I try to balance it out (in my head) by using Freecycle and Ebay, but I know I could be a lot more proactive in this area.
